From Navigating UCAS to Writing a Killer Personal Statement, We Have Your Back

Introduction

With easy access to Europe, qualifying undergraduate courses for subjects such as law and medicine, and a high quality of education, it is no wonder that the UK is the second most popular study abroad location worldwide. Moreover, the UK is home to Ed Sheeran, the Great British Bake Off and, most importantly, Cadbury’s chocolate. We’re not surprised you want to study there.

However, the university application process can be a bit baffling to the most astute of students, so read on for advice on writing a successful application to a UK university.

UCAS

UCAS stands for University and College Admissions Service, and is essentially the centralised service that all domestic and international students use to apply. There is an application fee of £24, or $41CAD. Although the process is fairly self-explanatory, some common mistakes that international students make are forgetting to include references, not sending the application fee, and completing the paper application in coloured ink.

Personal Statement

After creating an account with UCAS, you will be prompted to upload a personal statement. It’s important to use the majority of your personal statement to convey your enthusiasm for your chosen subject. Discuss your specific interest within your subject and any supporting material you have read. You should also write about how the courses you studied in high school, alongside your work experience and extra curriculars, will help you succeed on your chosen course. For example you chose a humanities or arts subject with fewer classes, you could describe how learning three musical instruments in your free time helped you become more self-motivated and improve your time-management skills.

Stand Out

Your Network of connections can help you a lot when getting a place at a UK university. Head to a Study and Go Abroad Fair near you this Spring or Fall to meet with admissions representatives from several major UK universities. This is an opportunity for you to learn about the specific things that your top choice universities are looking for in applications. They can also help answer your burning questions about accommodation, student life, visas, scholarships and much more!
